A number of years ago while traveling in the Smokies I came accross a whole library of CDs called Smoky Mountain Hits, Hymns etc. I lost my copies of two of the volumes I had bought and was thrilled to find at least one of them on Amazon. It is great old time music with authentic instruments of the time/5(4).

Hall' s mission was to preserve as much as he could before a unique culture had dispersed. Hall's work with the mountain people quickly became a labor of love.

Songs of the Smokey Mountains was the sole LP released by Capitol during Acuff's stay with the label in the mid-'50s. It contains remakes of his classics from the late '30s and early '40s, recorded in three sessions in The original versions are definitive, of course, but it is interesting to hear Acuff reprise these songs under more modern recording conditions.
